Spring 2021 Upcoming Events

Backcountry Monthly Trivia

In hiking terminology, the backcountry is a remote or sparsely populated area in the wilderness that is difficult to access due to a lack of roads and trails. To get to the backcountry, you need to know things. Let's see what you know through this trivia event!

Backcountry Monthly Trivia is virtual pub trivia from the comforts of your home, brought to you by CMU-SV Student Affairs. Every first Friday of the month, your Backcountry Monthly Trivia host, Stephanie Caruso, will ask your team questions and you will show us what you know. You can sign up in advance to compete as a team of your CMU-SV friends to compete, play solo, or be randomly assigned a group of peers to compete with. Trivia winners will receive Grubhub credits! Trivia topics will be broad and nothing is off-limits :) So grab your brains, your favorite beverage and snack, and get ready to show us what you know!

All participants must register for each trivia session in advance: https://cmu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUvfumqpjksG93wBo3kwPAns4S_i5efM0v

Registration for trivia closes the day before the event at 5 pm PST.

Summit Virtual Experience!

As part of our spring Summit programming this spring, we are pleased to offer each student the opportunity to participate in a virtual experience through AirBnB! Airbnb describes their experiences as "...one-of-a-kind activities designed and hosted by locals from all over the world. Unlike a typical tour or workshop, experiences go beyond the activities themselves. They offer a deep-dive into the local host's world through their passion." Virtual experiences will be offered all semester long. Let's explore the world together through these experiences!

SUMMIT 2021 SPRING EXPERIENCES
Interactive Magic & Illusion Show
Living Room Legends Scavenger Hunt Game
Hidden Jazz Club
'True vs False' Funny Historical Game

CANCELLED - Tales from the Trail Storytelling

Tales from the Trail is a storytelling event where CMU-SV students, staff, and faculty from around the globe are invited to share their story. Adapted from the podcast and live performance The Moth, Tails from the Trail will feature a theme with each storyteller invited to share their true and authentic story live to the CMU-SV Community. An excellent way to practice public speaking and bravely connect with your community, Tales from the Trail will be a one of a kind SV experience that you won't want to miss.

Here is a summary of The Moth from their website: The Moth is true stories, told live and without notes (for the CMU-SV event, storytellers can use notes). The Moth celebrates the ability of stories to honor both the diversity and commonality of human experience and to satisfy a vital human need for connection. It seeks to present recognized storytellers among established and emerging writers, performers, and artists and to encourage storytelling among communities whose stories often go unheard.

THEME FOR THE NIGHT: TRANSPARENT.

Summit Social Guide Registration

Every good adventure requires an equally good guide to inspire, motivate, and keep you on track. The first week of classes will culminate in the selection of Summit Social Guides (SSG) - a representative for each Summit Squad that will partner with CMU-SV Student Affairs to bring the CMU-SV experience to you, around the globe. Each Summit Social Guide will receive a special CMU-SV shirt and have the honor of bringing their Squad together for social events throughout the semester with the support and guidance of the Associate Director of Student Services and Engagement.

Summit Squad - Pack for the Peak

Summiting a mountain is no easy feat, but it helps to have a great pack of peers on your side to support you. Meet your Summit Squad for the first time and prepare for the virtual adventure of a lifetime with your new crew! Join your Summit Squad friends for this part team-building, part Summit Squad-competition where you will "pack for the peak" and decide what tools you'll need to get to the top. The Squad who packs for the peak the best will win a badge. You'll also decide on a name for your Summit Squad during this event! You won't want to miss this.

Friday, 9/4

Summit Squad Campfire Stories

There’s nothing like starting a night before the summit with a good campfire story. Gather ‘round in your small groups and build a campfire story together that is sure to be told for generations. Your Squad will start with a complete sentence, then finish with an incomplete sentence. You’ll go around finishing each other’s sentences, three words at a time, to tell a complete story. Later, we’ll share the stories told by each Squad and vote on the stories - the Squad to tell the best story will win a badge!

Thursday, 9/10

7:00 p.m. local in your timezone, live with your Summit Squad

Game Night - Codenames

Staying connected to your fellow adventurers is crucial when trying to summit a mountain. How well can you read the minds of your fellow Summiteers? Join your Squad for a fun round of Codenames, a game where two teams compete by each having a "spymaster" give clues that point to words on the board while other players on the team attempt to guess their team's words. It’s a friendly race to the top by guessing all the words assigned to your team before the other team does!

Grateful to Summit

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it is a good time to take a moment of pause and reflect on all we have to be grateful for -even during challenging times. Take a few seconds to share with the Summit community what you are grateful for in this Summit Community word cloud. On Monday, November 23rd, we will share the finalized word cloud with the CMU-SV community.

Monday, 11/16 - Monday, 11/23

View the live word cloud here!
