Abstract

Fog/Edge computing is a framework that describes an approach to computing done closer to the device and at the edge of the network. Fog concepts have been well publicized in the recent past and is gaining real momentum especially in the industrial IoT sector. This presentation explains how these fog concepts are applied to solve the real world use cases in manufacturing, transportation, oil & gas, smart cities/building verticals, using a leading edge Fog computing technology platform from FogHorn. We describe some basic constraints and challenges inherent to working in a fog environment followed by our approach to overcoming those challenges, illustrated using actual use cases in some of the verticals from above.

Three key take-aways the audience will gain from this presentation:

  1. Learn about the challenges faced in industrial IoT use case implementations and why Cloud computing alone is not adequate for addressing these challenges.

  2. Understand how intelligent insights were derived from analytics and machine learning executed at the edge and what real-world use cases are most likely to benefit from these technologies.

  3. Learn how self-correcting ML models can be deployed and executed at the edge (Edge AI or closed-loop-ML)
